Been on the fence about purchasing a suppressor? Here’s 3 reasons why you need to buy one.
- Your friends will shoot with you more
- You will look much cooler at the range because you have a whisper pickle
- The ATF is approving the paperwork necessary to transfer a suppressor IN ONLY DAYS right now, historically the wait is over nine months to a couple of years… don’t wait for that to change.
In all seriousness, the suppressor is an essential piece of kit for every gun owner. For the uninitiated, a suppressor is a muzzle device that reduces the sound signature of a firearm. Think of the way that a car muffler works, with multiple baffles that trap the sound and expanding gasses on its way out. The term “silencer” is a bit of a misnomer, as a suppressed firearm is never completely silent. Hollywood “movie quiet” depictions of suppressors would lead you to believe that we can fire our suppressed Walther PPK, and the people 5 feet away being none the wiser… which is not the case. However, with the right caliber and subsonic ammunition, you can achieve a much quieter shot than most people expect.
Okay, why do you really need one?
- Hearing protection: This is the most obvious reason. Many people equip their home defense firearms with suppressors because they might not have time to put on ear protection in an emergency.
- Range etiquette: Your ears and fellow shooters will appreciate the reduced noise from your suppressor compared to a muzzle brake. Indoor ranges often appreciate suppressed firearms, especially during classes with new, easily-startled shooters.
- Neighborly relations: If you have a backyard range, your neighbors will thank you for the quieter shooting experience. Now you can magdump trash in peace.
